"Wax on, Wax off!"
I'm a bit obsessed with birds as of late.
Actually it all started back in May. Right before I left for The Vermont Studio Center my mother called me and told me about a dream she had in which my great-grand mother came to visit me in the form of a bird on my terrace.
Since then I haven't been able to shake the birds! I'm drawing them, I'm painting them, and the other day while I was printing photos of birds and shuffling through my deck of Bird Wisdom cards, an enormous pigeon flew onto the window sill of my 4th floor studio and poked his head in to take a look at the work on my painting table. Folks, I kid you not!
So, I got this idea for bird forms and just went with it. I have no idea what it is. I think it's actually a sketch for the next step of....whatever this is.
What you're looking at are bird forms cut out of a double-sided digital printout which is then coated with natural beeswax that I ordered from The Wax Works. (Needless so say-they smell heavenly!)
On one side of each bird form is a photo of an old house or plantation, and on the other side is sheet music from an old hymn called "Spirit of God, Descend upon my Heart". I'm all but sure this will be the working title.
But what I really want to know is: Do you think I nullified the one year warranty on my 9.99 euro iron by using it to melt bees wax?

Kesha, Yep, probably is void, but who cares? Beautiful birds! They are just amazing in the 2nd and 3rd shots.
ReplyDeleteI think that's wonderful. Personally, I love the freedom of any animal that fly's birds included. It reminds me of the freedom that out souls will have one day. BEAUTIFUL WORK! Dreams are sooo wonderful! I find them very interesting! They almost always have a meaning behind them.

Hey.....! The birds turned out great! I love the play of light and shadow, the whole feeling of a flock whirling in a circle. Excellent.
ReplyDeleteYeah, wax is pretty cool stuff. I've been messing with encaustic painting lately, and that smell is pretty addictive.
I love them and what a beautiful hymn!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful. You have a very interesting and unique art.

Thanks everyone for the comments. I too am enjoying the birds more and more. I also have a few more ides for what moves to make next.
ReplyDeleteTo be continued...
absolutely love this...i do a lot of bird paintings myself that have a mystical sense to them so I admit I'm biased. I also wrote the comment you reacted to so strongly on the artbizblog....about losing everything! nice to find you
ReplyDeleteKesha, I love the birds! I just wanted to share the tip from my days of making beeswax saturated origami bowls (why did I do that?) - you can get excess beeswax off paper by putting it the oven for awhile at 190 f. It melts away the excess but leaves plenty in the paper fibers, and no leftover mess.
ReplyDeleteOh wow, these are so beautiful. It's wonderful that you can create something so lovely out of what most people would regard as trash.
ReplyDeleteAt the same time a little creepy, if you remember the Hitchcock movie Birds - I guess the b&w does that for me. But on the whole, I love art that is complex like that!
