What Activities in Your Life Deserve to be Given the CHOP?
One of the questions I get asked most often is “You have so many things going on! How do you manage to get everything done?”
The answer: I don’t.
The truth is that I have no magic recipe for packing more hours into the day. My to-do list often over flows onto 2 or even 3 pages, I don’t have a full or even part-time assistant to help me get things done, and I have just as many work and family obligations as the next gal.
The only reason that I’m able to be so productive, work on so many fun projects, and take all of my exciting, last minute weekend getaways is because I have learned to say “No!”
Every errand, so-called obligation, or activity that has no significantly positive, long-term impact on my life has been banished. I simply give them the “CHOP”.
“I’m having a boring dinner party Friday, can you come?” Thanks! But Nope.
“Hey, we’re gonna see the new Justin Timberlake movie. Wanna come?” Nope.
“Can you donate an artwork to our annual fundraiser….?” Uhm, Hell No.
Chop, Chop, and CHOP!
I don’t have spare time. All of my time is accounted for and filled with high-value and high-reward experiences that truly increase the quality of my life.
---Note here that I said life, not art career.
Learning to say “no” easily and often, will not only allow you to make advances in your art career, but will ultimately improve the over-all quality of your life.
My question to you:
What can you start saying “No” to TODAY?
What do you have a hard time saying "No" to?
What do you have a hard time saying "No" to?
What everyday activities in your life deserve to be given the CHOP?
What low-value activity can you completely eliminate from your schedule until you’ve reached some of your more rewarding, meaningful goals?

I need to subscribe to a CHOP lifestyle. At least regarding my to do list!
ReplyDeleteGreat conversation starter. For me, I have gotten rid of useless time online. It really is an energy suck reading everyone's blogs. Sometimes, you have to take care of home first before you invite others into your life.
ReplyDeleteOh Kesha! You are speaking to me! Thank God I have been in this mode for a while now. I've had worthwhile, heartfelt concerns from family and friends: "What happened to your poetry? I thought you were going to write a book of poetry?" or "You would make a great counselor; weren't you in school for that?" Well, yes, I was going to do those things and about 5 others, but now, right NOW? It's about rendering, allowing my soul to hear the voice of God and to listen and work. No results planned, no hidden agenda.
ReplyDeleteI know I watch waaay too much TV. So I will be cutting out many silly reality shows next year.
ReplyDeleteThe feeling of obligation to family needs chopping oh and needy friends.
ReplyDeleteI've been working on this for a long time, especially with art-related online activities. I used to be a member of all sorts of artist groups, sites, and forums, but quickly realized that they were mainly just a place for artists to complain and either pump up egos or tear each other down, and got only minimal traffic to my site out of them. So buh-bye to all of those.
ReplyDeleteAs for other things like Etsy, I'm still not sure. Since no set formula works flawlessly for any artist, I try to try something new at least once a month. But to not get bogged down with it, I need to figure out how much of a try is a good try, I don't want to waste my time, but I don't want to give up prematurely, either.
